Why Is It Necessary to Trim Cat Nails? ✂️

In addition to preventing overly long nails from scratching themselves, their owners, or furniture, the most important reason is that—compared to their wild counterparts—domestic cats have a much smaller activity range. Furthermore, the low friction of tile floors means that indoor cats miss many opportunities to naturally wear down their nails.

Cat claws are retractable; when they are relaxed, the elasticity of the ligaments causes the claws to fold back. However, if a cat's nails are too long, even when retracted, the claws can still protrude, potentially affecting their walking and leading to situations where the nails can pierce the pads.

Here Are Some Important Points to Note When Trimming Your Cat's Nails:

🕵️‍♂️ Check the Blood Vessel Position: Since cats have translucent nails with blood vessels inside, make sure to cut at least 2mm away from the tip of the blood vessel.

🛠️ Check the Blade Direction: Ensure that the blades of the nail clipper are positioned on the sides of the claw. If they are positioned on the top and bottom, this increases the risk of slipping and causing the nail to splinter.

If a cat absolutely cannot tolerate nail trimming, ensure that there are plenty of scratching toys at home, such as cat trees, scratching posts, or materials like sisal or cardboard to mimic their natural environment.

Every cat's nail growth rate and scratching habits vary, so the frequency of trimming will differ. Generally, cat nails need to be trimmed every 2 to 5 weeks.
